Changing with Times: The Emerging Role of Mental Health Workers and Professionals
The National Alliance on Mental Illness presents the NAMI Provider Education Course, 10
session (30 hours) in mental illness education designed and written by Joyce Burland, Ph.D., a
family member, clinical psychologist and author of the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program.

Session 1: Orientation
Session 2: Clinical Bases
Session 3: The major mental illnesses
Session 4: Types and subtypes of mood disorders / diagnoses of panic disorder and OCD /
Co-occurring brain and addictive disorders
Session 5: Research into the biological bases of mental illness: Review of research indicating
structural and functional brain abnormalities in mental illness; Genetic Research
Session 6: Medication Review
Session 7: Inside Mental Illness
Session 8: Responding effectively to families in Stage II
Session 9: Meeting the whole family
Session 10: Why advocacy? Helping families and consumers in Stage III
Provider Education is a ten-week class taught by a team of 5 people (2 people who are family
members of someone with a mental illness, 2 consumers, and a health care professional who
is also either a family member of someone with a mental illness or a consumer ).
