NAMI Arizona - National Alliance on Mental Illness of Arizona
"In Our Own Voice" Presentation
In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness is a public recovery education program presented by
trained consumers to other consumers, families, other lay audiences, and professionals. It is for
anyone who wants to know how people with serious mental illnesses cope with the realities of their
disorders while recovering and reclaiming productive lives that have meaning and dignity.
In Our Own Voice is a multi-media, interactive program featuring a video
and discussion with consumers offering other consumers realistic help
to develop coping skills and hope for living fulfilling, successful lives.
The program also provides a safe place for consumers to talk about
similar experiences with the problems of mental illness and the hopes
in recovery that can be realized. The consumer presenters are role
models for hope.
In Our Own Voice is not a lecture but is intended as a way to spur
discussion for both consumer and lay audiences. It has proven to be
an enriching experience for the consumer presenters who develop
leadership skills and increased confidence. Presenting the program
empowers the trained presenters as they reach beyond the perceived
limits of their illnesses and take a significant step in their own recovery.
Program Components:
An 11-minute video that takes you into the lives and thoughts of consumers who talk about their
experiences with issues critical in dealing with severe mental illness: Dark Days, Acceptance,
Medications, Coping, and Successes, Hopes and Dreams.
A short presentation by each consumer presenter, who briefly relates his or her personal
experience with each of the above issues. The consumer presenter then opens a discussion on
these topics, encouraging discussion and questions from the audience.
A take-home packet distributed to all attendees
Audiences:
Consumers…in day programs, inpatient settings, support groups, group homes, and other
community settings where they can share, learn, and find hope.
Family members, friends, and lay audiences…..attending support meetings, community health
programs, community education programs, churches, schools and other civic meetings
Professionals, Police, Providers, ….wherever and whenever practical real-life information about
schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses will help professionals understand that recovery
is possible. Psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, primary-care physicians, and police will benefit from
seeing consumers at various stages of recovery, not just when they are the most symptomatic.
Providers will see that better services will help consumers regain productive lives and that quality
services are essential in achieving that result.
It is sponsored by NAMI Arizona as a community service.
